 Narration কাকে বলে ?

কোনো ব্যক্তি কথা বলার সময় যা যা বলে তাই মূলত Speech/Narration.সুতরাং বক্তা যা বলে তাকে Speech বা Narration বলে।

Speech/Narration দুই প্রকার। যথা:

1.Direct Speech (প্রত্যক্ষ উক্তি)

2.Indirect Speech (পরোক্ষ উক্তি)

1. Direct Speech কাকে বলে ? 

যখন কোনো কথাকে পরিবর্তন না করে অবিকল সে ভাষায় বলা হয় তখন তাকে Direct Speech/Narration বলে।

 

উদাহরণ: Direct Speech: Jamil said to me, “I am a good student.”

Direct Speech দুটি অংশ থাকে। যথা:

1.Reporting Verb: Inverted Comma (“  ”) এর ভিতের অংশকে Reported Speech বলে। (উপরে “I am a good student.” হলো Reported Speech.)

2.Reported Speech: যে Verb দ্বারা বক্তব্য প্রকাশ করা হয় তাকে Reporting Verb বলে। (এখানে said হলো Reporting Verb.)

2. Indirect Speech কাকে বলে ? 

যখন কোনো কথাকে পরিবর্তন করে ব্যক্ত করা হয় তখন তাকে Indirect Speech/Narration বলে।

 Direct Speech: Jamil said to me, “I am a good student.”

Indirect Speech: Jamil said to me that he was a good student. 

পূর্বের Direct Speech-এর উদাহরণে আমারা দেখেছিলাম যে, Jamil তার নিজের ব্যাপারে বলেছিল যে “I am a good student.” 

***Rule:  R.V.পরিবর্তন +Linker বসাতে হবে+ Person পরিবর্তন করতে হবে+ Tense /Verb পরিবর্তন করতে হবে+ Word পরিবর্তন করতে হবে।

The Rules of Passage Narration

The speaker and the listener নির্ণয় করতে হবে।

No subject = The speaker

No object The listener/The person spoken to

R.V. বাক্যের শেষে বা Passage এর মাঝে থাকলে তাকে বাক্যের শুরুতে নিয়ে আসতে হবে।

একই Subject এর একাধিক উক্তি থাকলে তবে দ্বিতীয় বা তৎপরবর্তী উক্তিগুলোর জন্যে:

1. Assertive added/further added/also said/again said.

2. Interrogative = also asked/again asked/further asked.

R.S. (please/can/could/will/would) থাকলে R.V. (asked/requested) হবে and follow to the imperative rules.

R.S. (you ought to/should/had better) = R.V. (advised) and follow to the imperative rules.

সম্বোধন সূচক শব্দ (Brother/Mum/Dad/Lord/Mom/Sister/Madam etc.) থাকলে

1. Addressing + যাকে করা হবে সেই+ as+ যা বলে সম্বোধন করা হয়েছ।

2. Relation যদি true হয় তবে তা R.V. এর object করতে হয়।

By Allah/by Jove/by God/by my life = Swearing by Allah/by Jove/by God/by my life.

R.V. (cried/muttered/replied/asked) = No change


নিচে Assertive Sentence-এর Direct Narration ও তার Indirect Narration দেওয়া হলো—

10 Sentences of Assertive Sentence (Direct & Indirect Narration):

    Indirect: My friend said that he would help me with my project.

  10. Direct: The manager said, "The meeting is important for all employees."
    Indirect: The manager said that the meeting was important for all employees.

10 Sentences of Interrogative Sentence (Direct & Indirect Narration):

Passage 4 (Direct Narration)

The policeman said to the man, "Why are you standing here so late at night?" The man replied, "I am waiting for my brother." The policeman nodded and asked him to be careful.

Passage 8 (Indirect Narration)

The policeman asked the man why he was standing there so late at night. The man replied that he was waiting for his brother. The policeman nodded and asked him to be careful.

Passage 5 (Direct Narration)

The student said to the teacher, "How can I improve my English?" The teacher replied, "Read books and practice speaking daily." The student thanked the teacher and decided to follow the advice.

Passage  (Indirect Narration)

The student asked the teacher how he could improve his English. The teacher replied that he should read books and practice speaking daily. The student thanked the teacher and decided to follow the advice.


6 Sentences of Imperative Sentence (Direct & Indirect Narration):

গঠন : Subject + ordered(আদেশ)/ advised(উপদেশ)/ forbade(নিষেধ)/ requested (অনুরোধ)+ Object+ to/not to+ Verb(RS)+ বাকী অংশ। [Main Verb দ্বারা শুরু হলে।]


1. Direct: The teacher said to the student, “Get out of the classroom.”

 Indirect: The teacher ordered the student to get out of the classroom.

2. Direct: He said to me, “Please give me a glass of water.”

Indirect: He requested me to give him a glass of water.

3. Direct: Mother said to me, “Always speak the truth.”

Indirect: Mother advised me to speak the truth always.

4 . Direct: The teacher said to the student, “Don’t miss the class.”

Indirect: The teacher forbade the student not to miss the class.

গঠন : Subject+ proposed/suggested + Object + that+ Subject(RS) + should + Verb(RS)+ বাকি অংশ। [Let দ্বারা শুরু হলে।]

5. Direct: He said to me, “Let us go out for a walk.”

Indirect: He proposed to me that we should go out for a walk.

6. Direct: He said to me, “Let them play football.”

Indirect: He proposed to me that they should play football.

2 Sentences of Optative Sentence (Direct & Indirect Narration):

গঠন: Subject + wished/prayed + that + Subject(RS) + may/might + Verb (RS) + বাকি অংশ।

1. Direct: Father said to me, “May you pass the examination.”
Indirect: Father prayed that I might pass the examination.
2. Direct: The teacher said to the students, “May Allah bless you.”
Indirect: The teacher wished that Allah might bless the students.

3 Sentences of Exclamatory Sentences (Direct & Indirect Narration):

গঠন: Subject + exclaimed with joy/exclaimed with sorrow + that + Subject(RS) + Verb(RS) + very/great( যদি How বা What দ্বারা শুরু হয়) + বাকী অংশ।

1. Direct: The students said, “Hurrah! Our team has won the game.”
Indirect: The students exclaimed with joy that their team had won the game.
2. Direct: The man said, “Alas! I am undone.”
Indirect: The man exclaimed with sorrow that he was undone.
3. Direct: Silvia said, “What a fine bird it is.”
Indirect: Silvia exclaimed with joy that it was a very fine bird.

Passage 1 (Direct Narration)

Rahim said, "What a beautiful sunset it is!" He stood by the river, admiring the view. His friend agreed, enjoying the peaceful moment together.

Passage 2 (Direct Narration)

Passage  (Indirect Narration)

The girl exclaimed that she was very lucky to win the prize. She jumped with joy, holding her trophy. Her parents clapped, feeling proud of her success.





Passage Narration with Answer of SSC


1. “Why are you putting up the foods in your pockets, sir? Why don’t you eat?” asked the nobleman. “I’m doing the right thing. My dress deserves these foods,” replied Sheikh Saadi. “I don’t understand what you want to mean,” said the nobleman. [Dhaka Board-2024]

Answer: The nobleman respectfully/politely asked Sheikh Saadi why he (S) was putting up the foods in his pockets. He (n) also asked him (S) why he (S) didn't eat. Sheikh Saadi replied that he (S) was doing the right thing. He (S) further said that his (S) dress deserved those foods. The nobleman said/replied that he (n) didn't understand what he (S) wanted to mean, and he (n) was sorry.


2. The teacher said to Rafiq, “Why didn’t you come to school yesterday?” Rafiq said “Sorry, sir. I took my mother to the hospital.” The teacher said, “How sad the news is! May she get well soon.”

Answer: The teacher asked Rafiq why he had not gone to school the previous day. With due respect, Rafiq apologised that he (R) had taken his (R) mother to the hospital. The teacher exclaimed with sorrow that the news was very sad. He (t) prayed that his (R) mother might get well soon.

3. “What are you reading?” Rifat said to Sifat. “I am reading an interesting drama written by Shakespeare. What an interesting drama it is! I have collected it from our school library,” said Sifat. “Please lend me the book,” said Rifat.[Rajshahi Board-2024; Barishal Board-2024]

Answer: Rifat asked Sifat what he (S) was reading. Sifat replied that he (S) was reading an interesting drama written by Shakespeare and he (S) also exclaimed with wonder/joy that it was a very interesting drama. He (S) added that he (S) had collected it from their school library. Rifat requested him (S) to lend him (R) the book.

4. “Why did you not go to school yesterday?” said the mother to the girl. “I was ill, mom.” the girl replied. “How are you today?” The mother asked again. “Well,” said the girl. “Don’t worry for me.”

Answer: The mother asked/enquired of/demanded of the girl why she (g) had not gone to school the previous day. Addressing her (g) as mom, the girl replied that she (g) had been ill. The mother again
asked/enquired of/demanded of the girl how she (g) was that day. The girl replied/answered that she (g)
was well and forbade her mother to worry for her (g)/told her mother not to worry for her (g).

5. Mother said to Nafi, “What are you doing now?” “I am doing my homework,” said Nafi. “Why did not you do it yesterday?” asked mother. “I was ill yesterday,” said Nafi. “Can I help you?” said mother.

Answer: Mother asked Nafi what he was doing then. Nafi replied that he was doing his homework. Mother asked again why he had not done it the previous day. Nafi replied that he had been ill the previous day. Then mother asked him if she could help him.

6. The teacher entered the classroom and said, “Dear students, are all of you present today?” “Except Rina, all are present, sir,” said the captain. “She has not come because of her mother’s illness.” “Oh! What a sad news it is! May her mother come round soon,” said the teacher. [Cumilla Board-2024]

Answer: The teacher entered the classroom and addressing them as dear students asked if all of them were present that day. The captain answered with respect that all were present except Rina and added that she had not come because of her mother's illness. The teacher exclaimed with sorrow that the news was very sad. He also wished that her mother might come round soon.


7. “I’ve got GPA-5 in the SSC Examination,” said Samir. “Congratulations, brother!” I said. “What do you intend to do now?” “I wish to study science in a reputed college. I’ve a mind to get admission in BUET after my HSC,” Samir replied.[Chattogram Board-2024; Dinajpur Board-2020]

Answer: Samir told me that he had got GPA-5 in the SSC Examination. Addressing him as brother, I
congratulated him. I asked him what he intended to do then. Samir replied that he wished to study
science in a reputed college and added that he had a mind to get admission in BUET after his HSC.


Passage Narration with Answer of HSC

1. Change the narrative style by using indirect speech: [Rajshahi Board-2024] 
"Why are your children crying, my daughter?" "They have been starving," said the woman. "Have you none else in the world?" "My husband died some months ago. He left them neither money nor any property. So, they are in great distress. They have to starve sometimes." "What a pity it is!" said the Caliph. 

Answer: Addressing the woman as his daughter the Caliph asked why her children were crying. The woman replied that they had been starving. The Caliph again asked if she had none else in the world. The woman replied that her husband had died some months ago. She added that he had left them neither money nor any property. So, they were in great distress. She also said that they had to starve sometimes. The Caliph exclaimed with sorrow that it was a great pity. 

2. Change the narrative style by using indirect speech: [Jashore Board-2024] 
"Are you ready to order, Sir?" said the waiter. "I would like to have a plain vegetable soup for starter. Then grilled chicken, boiled potatoes and garlic bread for main course," replied the customer. "Anything for dessert?" asked the waiter. "Just a scoop of ice cream, please," said the customer. 

Answer: The waiter respectfully asked the customer if he was ready to order. The customer replied that he would like to have a plain vegetable soup for starter. Then he added that he would like to have grilled chicken, boiled potatoes and garlic bread for main course. The waiter again asked if he wanted anything for dessert. The customer replied politely that he wanted just a scoop of ice cream. 

3. Change the narrative style by using indirect speech: [Barishal Board-2024] 
The old man said, "Can you give me some food? I have been starving for two days." The maid said, "Why do you beg? Can't you work?" "No, I am unable to work," the old man replied. The maid again said, "Don't you have anyone to look after you?" "No, I have none on this earth who can take care of me", said the old man.  

Answer: The old man asked the maid if she could give him (old man) some food and added that he had been starving for two days. The maid asked him why he begged and also asked him whether he couldn't work. The man replied in the negative and added that he was unable to work. The maid again asked if he didn't have anyone to look after him. The old man replied in the negative and added that he had none on this earth who could take care of him.
 
4. Change the narrative style by using indirect speech: [Jashore Board-2024] 
"Are you ready to order, Sir?" said the waiter. "I would like to have a plain vegetable soup for starter. Then grilled chicken, boiled potatoes and garlic bread for main course," replied the customer. "Anything for dessert?" asked the waiter. "Just a scoop of ice cream, please," said the customer.
