The Sun Rising
The Sun Rising” কবিতাটি সর্বমোট ৩০ চরণ। কবিতার মাত্রা অনিয়মিত এবং ২ থেকে ৬ মাত্রার মাঝেই সীমাবদ্ধ। “The Sun Rising” কবিতায় কবি সূর্যকে একজন বোকা ও অবাধ্য বৃদ্ধরুপে চরিত্রায়ন (Personify) করেছেন। অন্যদিকে কবি এই কবিতার বক্তাকে সূর্যের প্রতি একজন রাগান্বিত প্রেমিক বা স্বামী হিসেবে প্রকাশ করেছেন। কবিতাটির সংগঠনের স্থান হল কবি জন ডানের শোবার ঘর। যেখানে তিনি তার স্ত্রীর সাথে রাত্রিযাপন করার পর স্ত্রীকে নিয়ে শুয়েছিলেন। সকালে তাদের গোপন কক্ষে সূর্যের আলো প্রবেশ করার পর কবি সূর্যের প্রতি অভিযোগ করেছেন সূর্যের আচরণ একেবারেই অদ্ভুত। কবি সূর্যের প্রতি অভিযোগ এনেছেন এইভাবে যে, সূর্যটা বড়োই দুরন্ত আর অবুঝ। সূর্য সব গোপনীয় স্থানগুলোতে আলো ফেলে। সূর্য যেন প্রেমিক প্রেমিকার গোপনীয়তাকে মোটেই আমল দেয় না। সর্ব সময়ে প্রকাশ করে দেয় গোপন ভালোবাসা, জানালার পর্দা ভেদ করে ঢুকে পড়ে প্রেমিক প্রেমিকার নিরিবিলি কক্ষে। সে প্রেমিক প্রেমিকার গোপন দিকটিতেও আলো ফেলে সব প্রকাশ করে ফেলে। কবি সূর্যকে উদ্দেশ্য করে বলেন, সূর্য যেন স্বামী-স্ত্রীর বাসর শয্যায় উঁকি না দিয়ে, বিচার বুদ্ধিহীন মানুষদের কাছে উপস্থিত হয়। যে সব বালকেরা দেরিতে বিদ্যালয়ে আসে তাদের বকা দিতে বলেছেন। কবি, কৃষকদের কৃষি কর্ম শেখাতে, শিকারিদের শিকারের কৌশল শেখাতে ডাকতে বলেছেন। এরপর কবি হুঁশিয়ারি দেন, তিনি সূর্যকে ঢেকে দিতে পারেন তার নিজের চোখের পলক ফেলে, যে কোনো সময় মেঘের আবরণে। কবি শেষে বললেন, সূর্যের এখন অনেক বয়স হয়েছে তার এখন বিশ্রাম গ্রহণ করা উচিত, তার উচিত কোনো গোপনীয় স্থানে আলো প্রদান না করা। মোট কথা, এ কবিতায় কবি কৌতুক আর রহস্যচ্ছলে সূর্যের বিরুদ্ধে নানা অভিযোগ উত্থাপন করেছেন। কবি সূর্যকে প্রশ্ন করেছেন যে, সূর্য কি পূর্ব ভারতে যে মশলাগুলো এবং পশ্চিম ভারতে যে স্বর্ণগুলো রেখে এসেছে, সেগুলোকি সেখানে এখন আর নেই। নাকি সেগুলো এখন কবির বিছানায়। কবি বলেন সারা পৃথিবীর সকল রাজপূত্র এখন কবি নিজেই আর কবির ভালোবাসার মানুষটি হল পৃথিবীর সকল রাজ্য। কবি বলছেন, হে সূর্য তুমি বিচার বুদ্ধিহীন হতভাগাদের কাছে যাও। আর যে সব বালকেরা দেরীতে বিদ্যালয়ে আসে তাদের গালি দাও, শিকারি ও কৃষকদের শিকার কর্মে আর কৃষি কর্মে ডাকো। সূর্য দেবকে হুশিয়ারী দিয়ে বললেন, আমি তোমার আলোক রশ্মি ঢেকে দিতে পারি মেঘের আবরণে। কিন্তু আমি আমার প্রেমিকা হতে চোখ সরাতে চাইনা, যদিনা তার দৃষ্টি পাতে তুমি অন্ধ না হয়ে যাও। দীর্ঘদিন পার হয়ে গেছে, এবার তোমার বিশ্রাম প্রয়োজন। কিন্তু কর্তব্যও আছে তোমার পৃথিবীকে আলো দান করার। মোট কথা কবি সূর্যকে নিষেধ করেছেন তার ভালোবাসায় যেন উকি দিয়ে জ্বালাতন না করে। তবে কবিতার শেষের লাইনগুলো কিছুটা অদ্ভুত। যেমন সূর্যকে কবি বলেন, সূর্যের এই বৃদ্ধাবস্থায় সারা পৃথিবীকে আলো না দিয়ে বরং কবি আর তার প্রেয়সীকে আলো দিলেই সারা পৃথিবীকে আলো দেয়া হবে।
